With many design influences springing from the West — Nordic, Scandinavian, French — we sometimes forget about the luxuries of the East. Simplistic with a taste of a different kind of rustic, they offer modern elegance with a twist. Lush plant life joins with simple slatted windows and rough-shod wood to create the feel of the jungle.
European interest in non-Western art was first stimulated by trade with the East in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries By the nineteenth century, with the advent of the railroad and steamship, lands that were little known to Westerners became easier to access. As more Europeans traveled beyond the established routes of the Grand Tourtheir experiences abroad began to influence their tastes at home.
This exhibition will focus on women as the creators of and inspiration for Arts and Crafts-style and Art Nouveau-style jewelry. Ruskin and Morris denounced industrial capitalism, which alienated workers from their own humanity, and opposed machine-made goods, which numbed the freedom and creativity of the brain. Arts and Crafts objects and structures are known for their use of natural streamlined or simplified forms, fondness of floral and geometric repetitive patterns, and dedication to high-quality artisanship.
For the designers behind AvroKothe New York firm known for its high-concept restaurant interiors, the most personal projects often start out as group obsessions. With a new AvroKo office in Hong Kong fielding projects like the recently opened New York—style eatery Lily in Bloom, their anthropological depository keeps growing. Latin-Asian fusion restaurant Zengo, they researched palaces built by dictators in both cultures, subtly weaving recurring tropes from power architecture into the design. A class of Texas Tech University interior design students spent their spring break in San Francisco touring design centers and showrooms, interviewing interior designers and hoping to make career connections in a city known for its style. Interior design professor Don Collierwho leads the interior tour class, believes the firsthand experience his 37 students gained on the trip will be critical as they begin work in their profession. This is his 12th such trip; he rotates between New York City, Chicago, San Francisco and Boston, visiting influential firms, museums and department stores each city has to offer.
